Creating Double Threats (Forks) in Connect 4

A fork means creating two winning threats with a single move. Your opponent can block only one of them, so the other becomes the winning line on your next turn. Forks are the main reason strong players win without needing a mistake from the opponent.

What a basic fork looks like

Imagine two separate three-in-a-row groups that share the same landing slot. When you drop a disc into that slot, both groups become four-in-a-row threats at the same time. The opponent blocks one, and you complete the other.

How to set one up

  1. Build a three-in-a-row that has two different open ends.
  2. Keep the shared landing slot free — do not fill it yourself.
  3. Watch for the moment your opponent is busy blocking elsewhere.
  4. Drop the fork move and force the win.

Spotted a fork coming? Defend early

If the opponent can create a fork next turn, blocking the final move is often too late. Instead, occupy the shared slot or create a threat that forces them to respond first.

Practice deliberately

Set up simple two-threat patterns against the AI, then try the same idea against a friend. Recognition comes from repetition.
